Duratrans prints and light boxes in Istanbul
DIFOART produces real duratrans prints on the Durst Lambda 131, up to 127 cm wide and 40 metres long, and builds the light boxes they are shown in. The Lambda exposes continuous tone onto photographic material rather than printing it with ink, which is where the black saturation and the smooth gradients of a backlit image come from.
What a duratrans is
A duratrans is a photographic transparency made to be lit from behind. Because the image is continuous tone, it holds deep blacks and even transitions when backlit. That is why it is used for artwork and exhibition pieces as much as for advertising.

Duratrans prints are produced up to 127 cm wide and 40 metres long. Light boxes are built up to 150 × 250 cm.
Resolution and colour
The Durst Lambda 131 exposes at full continuous tone, selectable between 200 and 400 ppi. The manufacturer compares the result to an apparent resolution of 4000 dpi on half-tone printers, because there is no halftone dot in the image at all. Colour is matched by spectrophotometer measurement and a physical proof print before production begins.
