High-end printing in Istanbul — pigment, C-print, canvas and duratrans
DIFOART prints in four ways, all in one workshop in Seyrantepe, Istanbul: archival pigment (giclée), chromogenic C-print, canvas, and backlit duratrans. Which one suits a work is a technical decision, not a commercial one. The surface of the image, the size and where the piece will hang decide it.
Which process for which work
Pigment (giclée). Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-6100, 11-ink pigment set with Chroma Optimiser, 2,400 × 1,200 dpi, up to 150 cm wide, on Hahnemühle fine art papers. The route for matt and textured art papers, and for work that has to hold up in a collection.
C-print. Durst Lambda 131, laser exposure onto real photographic paper developed in wet chemistry, up to 127 cm wide. Full continuous tone, selectable between 200 and 400 ppi, with no halftone dot in the image. The route for photographic surfaces and deep blacks.
Canvas. 100% cotton, 355 g/m², matt, up to 150 cm gross width. Stretched in our own workshop on kiln-dried imported pine bars in 2 × 4 cm and 4 × 4 cm profiles, then varnished matt or gloss, both UV-protective. The route for work shown without glass.
Duratrans. A photographic transparency made to be lit from behind, up to 127 cm wide and 40 metres long, with light boxes built up to 150 × 250 cm. The route for backlit exhibition pieces and displays.
What is the same in all four
Colour is measured with a spectrophotometer, judged on a calibrated monitor and matched against a physical proof print before production begins. Paper-specific ICC profiles are used. Framing, mounting and installation are carried out in the same workshop, so one team is responsible from file to wall.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between pigment and C-print?
Pigment printing lays archival pigment ink onto a fine art paper. A C-print exposes the image with laser light onto real photographic paper, which is then developed in wet chemistry. Pigment suits matt, textured art papers; C-print suits photographic surfaces and deep blacks.
How wide can you print?
Up to 150 cm on the pigment printer, up to 127 cm on the Durst Lambda for C-print and duratrans, and up to 150 cm gross on canvas.
Can I see a proof before the full run?
Yes. A physical proof print is produced and compared with the original. It takes two working days and is charged separately.
Do you frame what you print?
Yes. Framing is done in the same workshop, with 58 frame profiles, museum glass and acid-free mountboard, up to 150 × 300 cm including glass.
